Using scenarios to look at the longer term
Scenarios are a common planning tool used widely within the university sector. During the development of the UUK project, many examples of scenario planning at an institutional level were idenitfied, most of which had played a significant role in helping to shape future strategy.

Much of the scenario planning work identified was designed to look at a three to five year time horizon. While very useful for medium-term planning, this inevitably increases the relative impact that current challenges have on the thinking that emerges.

The UUK project therefore took a much longer timeframe – to 2040 – in an attempt to 'raise the sights' above many of the immediate pressures and debates that are pressing in the sector. It is hoped that this helps universities to pause and reflect on what the long term may hold for the sector and their place in it.

The resources developed through the UUK project are intended to support and complement any scenario planning work you have already done or are embarked on.
