The UUK project generated a set of scenarios through to 2040. The design of these was based on the structure of the influential Mont Fleur scenarios (developed as part of the democratisation process in South Africa in the early 1990s). These give an example of one approach to developing scenarios and give you something to compare with your own scenarios and planning assumptions.
The three example scenarios are:
- Flight of the Flamingos 'vision' scenario – 'networks of universities at the heart of social and economic advance'
- Icarus – 'Rapid expansion at the expense of a global reputation for excellence'
- Lame ostrich – 'Internecine struggles and marginalisation'

The agenda for the scenario workshop includes the option of comparing the ideas that emerge from the group with those contained in these example scenarios.
Alternatively (or additionally), you can compare them with any existing scenarios that you have created as part of your own strategic planning either as a cross check on critical issues or as a different set of perspectives to prompt discussion.
More details on these example scenarios can be found in this document.
You may also like to look at a version of a presentation that was originally given by Paul O’Prey, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Roehampton, to UUK's 2011 Annual Conference. This provides an overview of some of the themes that emerged from our exercise. Please also refer to the report 'Futures for higher education: analysing trends' for more on meeting these challenges into the future.
