Anonymous donor funds research centre to improve treatment for bipolar disorder
In February 2008, thanks to the generous £1.3m support of an anonymous donor, Lancaster University’s Spectrum Centre for Mental Health Research opened its doors, with a mission to apply evidence-based research to improving the lives of people with bipolar disorder.
There is a singular lack of research effort in the field of bipolar disorder, and the Spectrum Centre has quickly forging a national reputation for leadership in this area.
The Centre’s research has a number of strategic themes. It aims to reach a fuller understanding of the psychology of the condition by looking at the full spectrum of the disorder, not just the very worst cases.
In addition, the Centre works to support families, who often carry a heavy burden. The Centre’s most distinctive goal, however, is to make sure its work helps to improve clinical care for people with bipolar disorder.
The £1.3m donation is expected to attract an extra £386,000 from the matched funding scheme.
