Overview:
Universities UK is organising a “Talking Shop” event to provide colleagues an early opportunity to discuss the major issues for higher education in the run up to the General Election and how universities can get the most out of the campaign.
There will be a panel session with speakers from three leading “Think-tanks” on future scenarios for higher education and the policy issues that will play a role in the General Election Campaign.
There will also be opportunity for smaller group discussions on issues such as:
- Influencing parliamentary candidates: this year’s election is likely to see one of the biggest turn-over’s of MPs in half a century. The campaign is a crucial opportunity for universities to engage with candidates; to build relationships with decision makers and to emphasise your core messages.
- Press work during an election campaign; the election presents an opportunity to raise the profile of your university with the local and even the national media.
- Funding and fees: the future shape of university funding and the wider public spending environment are two issues that will dominate the first year of the new parliament. We will set out the key elements of UUK’s approach on these issues and how they can help you develop your own themes.
Universities UK will also present the main points in its election manifesto, which is due to be published at the beginning of March.
